Smuggling drone forced down and seized at Norviliškės, Lithuania
· Norviliškės
Officially reported cross-border smuggling-drone incident
Shortly after midnight on 16 September 2026, in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, thermal imaging picked up a drone carrying a rectangular cargo as it entered Lithuania from Belarus near Norviliškės, in the Šalčininkai district. Counter-drone action forced it down, and border guards seized the drone together with 1,000 packs of NZ Gold cigarettes.
According to the border guard service VSAT, the drone was flown by smugglers operating from or across the Belarus border; the operators’ nationality and any state sponsorship have not been established. It was a criminal cargo flight, not a military strike, and it was brought down by electronic counter-drone measures rather than shot down.
No casualties or third-party damage were reported. Administrative proceedings were opened, and VSAT counted the case as the 57th of the year.
