Romania says Russian drone hit Galați apartment block, injuring two

Reported foreign

Overnight on 29 May 2026 a drone struck the roof of an apartment block in the Mazepa district of Galați, Romania, and started a fire. Two people suffered minor injuries, residents were evacuated and homes were damaged. Officials estimated that the drone carried at least 30 kg of explosives.

Based on an official radar and debris assessment, Romanian authorities identified it as a Russian Geran-2 drone. It was associated with a wider wave of 43 drones in attacks on Ukraine and made a brief flight over Romania before the impact. Moscow disputed the attribution. Romania did not describe the strike as an intentional attack directed at Romania.

Two Romanian F-16s and a helicopter were scrambled but did not engage over the city, and the site was examined. The Russian consul was expelled and the consulate closed in response. The incident is separate from a drone crash in Galați on 25 April 2026.
