Cigarette smuggling drone from Belarus brought down near Dubas, Lithuania

Officially reported cross-border smuggling-drone incident

On the night of 5 April 2026, possibly continuing into 6 April, Lithuanian border guards used thermal surveillance to detect an inbound drone near the village of Dubas in the Varėna district. Counter-drone action brought it down in nearby woodland. The drone was carrying 1,000 packs of NZ Gold cigarettes.

The drone was reported to have approached from Belarus, and the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) attributed the flight to smugglers operating across the Belarus border. The operators’ nationality and any state sponsorship have not been established. The case was a criminal cargo flight, not a military strike, and is not evidence of an attack by a foreign state.

No casualties or third-party damage were reported. The drone and its cargo were seized and administrative proceedings followed. VSAT published the case on 7 April 2026.
