Cigarette smuggling drone retrieved from pine tree near Milvydai, Lithuania
– · Milvydai
Officially reported cross-border smuggling-drone incident
On the night of 23–24 February 2026, Lithuanian border guards intercepted a cargo drone near Milvydai in the Šalčininkai district, close to the border with Belarus. After an electronic counter-drone intervention, the drone ended up lodged in the crown of a pine tree about 0.5 km from the border. It was carrying 500 packs of cigarettes. On 24 February forestry staff helped the border guards retrieve it, and the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) published the case on 25 February.
VSAT attributed the flight to smugglers operating across the Belarus border. The operators’ nationality and any state sponsorship have not been established, and the drone’s full flight track was not made public. The case was treated as a criminal cargo flight, not a military strike, and is not evidence of an attack by a foreign state.
No casualties or third-party damage were reported. The drone and its cargo were seized, and administrative proceedings followed.
