Lithuanian border guards force down cigarette smuggling drone near Purvėnai

Officially reported cross-border smuggling-drone incident

On the night of 27 January 2026, Lithuania’s State Border Guard Service (VSAT) detected a quadcopter entering Lithuania near the village of Purvėnai in the Šalčininkai district. The official release, issued on 28 January, referred to Tuesday night without saying on which side of midnight the flight took place. After an electronic counter-drone intervention the drone was forced down, and border guards recovered it together with nearby cargo of 1,000 packs of Belarus-stamped cigarettes.

The drone was reported to have approached from Belarus, and VSAT attributed the flight to smugglers operating across the Belarus border. The operators’ nationality and any state sponsorship have not been established. The case was handled as a criminal cargo flight, not a military strike, and it is not evidence of an attack by a foreign state.

No casualties or damage to third parties were reported. The drone and the cigarette cargo were seized.
