Latvia says drone shot down near Rugāji by Italian jet was Ukrainian
· Rugāji
Confirmed Ukrainian attribution in later report
Early on 14 August 2026 an incoming drone (UAV) was shot down by an Italian Eurofighter flying with NATO near Rugāji, in Latvia's Balvi municipality, about 35 km from the Russian border. Troops then searched for the wreckage.
The drone was initially unidentified. On 20 August Latvia confirmed that it was of Ukrainian origin. It may have entered Latvia from Belarus, and Russian electronic interference was considered, but neither has been independently established.
No casualties were reported. The 20 August identification was an update on the same incident, not a second incursion.
