Three drones enter Latvia; two crash, one damaging oil tanks at Rēzekne

Multi-drone cluster

On 7 May 2026 three drones entered Latvia from Russian airspace over the Balvi, Ludza and Rēzekne area. Two crashed and one left Latvia. One of the impacts affected an oil-storage site at Rēzekne, where four empty oil tanks were damaged and a fire broke out. Explosive effects were reported, but the exact charges are unknown.

The drones’ technical origin was initially unresolved; later reporting associated the incidents with Ukrainian strike drones. Latvia’s defence ministry discussed Russian electronic warfare as a possible cause. A military and police investigation followed, with criminal proceedings under Chapter 10 of the Latvian Criminal Law.

No casualties were reported. NATO aircraft were deployed and mobile alerts were issued. Wreckage was recovered from one crash site while another was still being searched for. After the oil-tank impacts, the Baltic states sought more NATO defence.
