Romanian F-16 fires on explosive naval drone near Neptun Deep works

Explosive military-USV incident; origin unresolved

On 20 August 2026 an unmanned surface vessel, or sea drone, carrying explosives was detected a few hundred metres from the Neptun Deep offshore works, roughly 80 nautical miles east of Constanța in Romania’s exclusive economic zone. Whether it approached or drifted towards the works, and what it was intended to do, is unresolved.

A Romanian F-16 fired on it with its cannon, damaging but not fully destroying it, and a Navy explosive ordnance disposal team then neutralised it. Official reporting confirmed an explosive charge of unspecified size. The defence ministry initially described two drones and later corrected this to one. No casualties or damage to the infrastructure were reported.

The drone’s launch point and operator are unknown. Romania’s defence minister said Ukraine had confirmed it was not Ukrainian; that statement does not establish who did launch it. The case is separate from the aerial drone that crashed near Grindu the same day.

Attribution and uncertainty

Origin / operator / attribution
Defence minister said Ukraine confirmed it was not Ukrainian; that does not positively establish another operator
Investigation / uncertainty
MApN reconciled aircraft and vessel observations and corrected initial two-drone account to one.

Military engagementControlled disposal

The supplied Observator footage appears to show the maritime drone approaching the platform. This is a visual interpretation of the footage, rather than a verified track. F-16 cannon fire hit and damaged the explosive drone, then Navy EOD neutralized it. The military engagement determines the map color; disposal was the subsequent stage.

Map positions are approximate anchors for the named place, not verified incident coordinates.
