Cross-border drone crash
In the early hours of 20 August 2026 a drone crashed about 4 km northeast of Grindu, in Tulcea County, Romania. According to the Romanian Ministry of National Defence, a group of drones was detected near Ukraine at 02:23 and a warning was issued at 03:20; one drone entered Romanian airspace about 13 km east of Galați at 03:21 and crashed at 03:24. The warning ended at 03:52 local time.
The drone was associated with attacks across the Danube, but the ministry’s initial release did not specify its model or operator, and a complete forensic result is not available.
It burned briefly after the crash and the fire went out on its own; no casualties or property damage were reported. Spanish F-18 fighters and a Romanian IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter responded, followed by a search and a technical examination. An earlier report said the recovered fragments posed no explosive hazard, which the initial release did not confirm. The crash is separate from the sea drone reported near Neptun Deep the same day.
