Explosive drone discovered by civilian; origin disputed
On 1 September 2026 a shepherd tending sheep found a damaged drone (UAV) in a field near Viișoara, Vaslui County, in Romania. The date is the verified discovery date, not an established crash date: the finder did not see the drone fall, and its flight route and crash time are unknown. Before the authorities arrived, the shepherd handled the drone and disconnected some of its parts.
Specialists confirmed that it contained explosive material. The type of drone has not been confirmed, and its official origin is unresolved: local reports offered conflicting claims that it was Russian or Ukrainian, and the device's identity and provenance were under investigation.
Gendarmes secured the site and SRI bomb specialists destroyed the drone in a controlled detonation. Prosecutors at the Iași Court of Appeal were notified. No casualties were reported.
