Ship casualty; alleged drone strike unconfirmed
On 27 August 2026 the merchant vessel Progress IV caught fire and sank in the Black Sea, about 15–20 nautical miles off Sfântu Gheorghe in Romania’s exclusive economic zone. A distress call came around 17:55 local time, and all 12 crew members had been rescued by 20:47.
An impact on the ship was alleged, and the authorities said its cause required investigation. A drone attack remained a hypothesis: no drone or other weapon has been identified, and no explosion or drone strike has been established. The ship’s flag was reported as the Dominican Republic, while a shipping-industry source cited Dominica.
One crew member was injured, reportedly with a fractured arm; earlier descriptions of a serious injury are not supported by later accounts. The maritime rescue coordination centre (MRCC) coordinated a commercial vessel, the Border Police and rescue ships.
