Drone assessed as Ukrainian type crashes and explodes at Kardam, Bulgaria

Crash with reported Ukrainian-type attribution

On 8 August 2026 a drone crashed and exploded in a sunflower field at Kardam, Bulgaria, near the Romanian border and close to gas infrastructure. It was reported to have flown through Romania and Bulgaria before the crash. No casualties or significant damage to infrastructure were reported.

The drone was reported as a Maya-type decoy and was assessed in earlier reporting as a Ukrainian type, but its final attribution has not been independently established. An explosive effect was observed, though the drone's exact configuration is unknown. By 26 August a Bulgarian minister said Ukraine had not provided the information requested; military prosecutors in Sliven are responsible for the case.

Bulgaria investigated, and additional counter-drone defensive measures were reported. The flight through Romania and the crash in Bulgaria are treated as one incident, not as separate Romanian and Bulgarian incidents.
