Unresolved mine-versus-drone impact
On 24 July 2026 the Liberian-flagged bulk carrier Christina B, a coal carrier reportedly sailing from the USA to Ukraine, issued an emergency call after a possible explosive impact in the Black Sea. The ship was about 22 miles off Sfântu Gheorghe, in Romania's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and outside Romanian sovereign territorial waters.
It has not been established whether the ship struck a mine or was hit by a maritime drone. The device and the mechanism of the explosion are unidentified, drone involvement has not been confirmed, and the origin and operator remain unresolved.
The ship was damaged; no injuries were reported. Romanian maritime authorities responded, and the vessel was assessed for onward movement or repairs.
